Sachin completed his 12th Std in March 1996 and was keen on doing his Engineering. The question was ---- which college and what Branch.
Because of the reservation issue in Tamilnadu, entry into Government Engineering colleges was ruled out.
We had heard of Karunya Institute because Sudha was doing a lot of dubbing work for Jesus Calls, a Christian Organization run by Bro D.G.S.Dhinakaran and his son Paul Dhinakaran. They had founded Karunya. Sudha and I paid a visit to Coimbatore. The college was set in tranquil surroundings near Siruvani Dam and was right next to the Chinmaya International School. There was a gym, good playing facilities and we were advised that the warden of the hostel was very strict. Overall, an ideal school from the point of view of the parents.
The next issue was---- which Branch. The day after we returned from Coimbatore, Satish and Jyothi came down to Chennai from Bangalore. We checked with them and Jyothi was emphatic that Sachin should take up Electronics & Communication Engg. That decided the matter.
Sudha packed Sachin's bags and they actually became soggy because of the copious tears that she shed at the thought of Sachin leaving home. The scene was repeated in the Railway Station also where we had gone to see him off.
Barely two months after he had joined Karunya, trouble broke out in the college over some issue. One of our distant relations--- Mr.Chandramouli-- was in Coimbatore and we sought his help to go to Karunya and check out things.Mr.Chandramouli was of great help during this time.
Shortly thereafter, Sachin broke out in rashes because of some allergy and again rushed back home.He got treated and then went back.
I'm not sure about his studies, but one thing Sachin did pick up was a lot of Malayalam phrases. Angane yaana, athareullo etc etc kept rolling off his tongue.
The other major event in 1996 was Akhila's wedding, held on 26th Dec . It was a nice affair. Harish's parents lived in Pune and Harish was in Jakarta. He was a tall and handsome lad ( still is, by the way) and we all had a grand time during the wedding in Bangalore.
