Rockfort Slowcoach

If you check the IRCTC website ( www.irctc.co.in), you'll see that the Rockfort Express  leaves Chennai at 10.30 PM and reaches Tiruchirapalli Junction next day at 5.30 AM. It covers a distance of 336 Km in 7 hours.

Here's the interesting thing. The train reaches Ponmalai ( Golden Rock) which is Km 324 at 4.24 AM stays there for just one minute , leaves at 4.25 AM and then covers a humungous distance of 12 Km in an even more humungous time of 1 Hour and 5 mins. All this according to the official timetable of the Indian Railways!!!!!

And we call this an Express train and pay a surcharge for the privilege of travelling in this super-fast train.

1997---Rajamani and Sudha's first foreign trip; Kannada Balaga major functions

The only remarkable events in 1997 were Sudha's and my mom Rajamani's first foreign trips.

Akhila had moved to Jakarta after her wedding and Vasuki & Prakash had also moved to Jakarta from Surabaya.

Kanthu had planned a trip to Jakarta to visit Vasuki and asked if mom would also come.Mom immediately said yes since Akhila was also in Jakarta. Kanthu and mom travelled together first and then Sudha joined them a month or two later.

They all travelled to places like Borobuddur and Bali. Sudha left earlier and stayed over for a couple of days in Singapore with a friend before returning to Chennai.

Kanthu and mom also stayed in Singapore for a couple of days before returning to Bangalore.

I remember that my mom was apprehensive of travelling by escalator which was inevitable in the airports and malls abroad. So we actually took her to Spencer's Plaza in Chennai to let her get used to moving up and down by escalator.

She was really thrilled by her first foreign trip and couldn't stop talking for days about the malls in Jakarta, particularly Diamon Mall which was within walking distance of Akhila's house.

Sudha particularly enjoyed Bali and Sentosa Island in Singapore.

1996( Sachin begins his Engineering)

Sachin completed his 12th Std in March 1996 and was keen on doing his Engineering. The question was ---- which college and what Branch.

Because of the reservation issue in Tamilnadu, entry into Government Engineering colleges was ruled out.

We had heard of Karunya Institute because Sudha was doing a lot of dubbing work for Jesus Calls, a Christian Organization run by Bro D.G.S.Dhinakaran and his son Paul Dhinakaran. They had founded Karunya. Sudha and I paid a visit to Coimbatore. The college was set in tranquil surroundings near Siruvani Dam and was right next to the Chinmaya International School. There was a gym, good playing facilities and we were advised that the warden of the hostel was very strict. Overall, an ideal school from the point of view of the parents.

The next issue was---- which Branch. The day after we returned from Coimbatore, Satish and Jyothi came down to Chennai from Bangalore. We checked with them and Jyothi was emphatic that Sachin should take up Electronics & Communication Engg. That decided the matter.

Sudha packed Sachin's bags and they actually became soggy because of the copious tears that she shed at the thought of Sachin leaving home. The scene was repeated in the Railway Station also where we had gone to see him off.

Barely two months after he had joined Karunya, trouble broke out in the college over some issue. One of our distant relations--- Mr.Chandramouli-- was in Coimbatore and we sought his help to go to Karunya and check out things.Mr.Chandramouli was of great help during this time.

Shortly thereafter, Sachin broke out in rashes because of some allergy and again rushed back home.He got treated and then went back.

I'm not sure about his studies, but one thing Sachin did pick up was a lot of Malayalam phrases. Angane yaana, athareullo etc etc kept rolling off his tongue.

The other major event in 1996 was Akhila's wedding, held on 26th Dec . It was a nice affair. Harish's parents lived in Pune and Harish was in Jakarta. He was a tall and handsome lad ( still is, by the way) and we all had a grand time during the wedding in Bangalore.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be

Nostalgia is a very funny thing. It’s a disease that seems to strike people when they cross 60---- as it did to me.
Lately, I seem to be attending all kinds of reunions and undertaking nostalgia trips----- school, college, hometown etc etc. All of these trips had one thing in common; the feeling of how nice the old days were in comparison to the present.
I grew up in Kolar Gold Fields and this mining town has almost shut down after the Government brought gold mining activities to a halt. Time seemed to have come to a standstill and when a group of us school friends from the Class of ‘65 visited KGF recently, it was almost as if we were entering a ghost town. The sense of nostalgia was, therefore , more overwhelming than if it had been a thriving place.
But that’s not the point I wish to make in this article. If the old days were so good, how come we didn’t feel it at that time? Why was I complaining about the black and white movies we were seeing when I’m able to enjoy them now? And why am I so nostalgic about the steam engine trains when I vividly remember being covered in coal dust after arriving in Bangalore from Oorgaum?
The truth is that Nature has this wonderful ability to selectively retain all the  good experiences/emotions etc from our past and hold back the pains/sorrows and traumas in the deepest recesses of our minds .
If we were given the chance to go back in time, would we say yes? We want the wide roads, lesser vehicles and fewer people of an earlier era. Do we also want (only) Doordarshan, Jutkas and trunk calls? I suspect not. What we’d really like is the wide roads, lesser vehicles and fewer people but together with the Internet, cable TV, smartphones, Facebook et al.
Nostalgia is a good emotion to have, but it must be balanced with an appreciation of the conveniences of modern living and, more importantly, an appreciation of present conveniences likely to disappear in the near future.
Switch forward to , let’s say, 2040.If you were to look back at 2014 , what are the things you are likely to miss?
Here is my list:-
1.   The newspaper and milk being delivered at the door.
2.   The vegetable vendor on his/her bicycle cart.
3.   The isthri person at the street corner.
4.   The raddiwala collecting old newspapers and other old stuff.
5.   The maidservant coming in daily.
One can  keep adding to this list. But the important thing is to appreciate the conveniences we currently have.

1995

We celebrated Sandeep's and Sunil's munji together in May 1995.It was held in the Subramanya Temple in Jayanagar 1st Block. The sweet was Badam Halwa for which I had brought the Badam from Singapore.

Sachin was now in the 12th Std and Sandeep in 9th Std.I was working in the Fisher Valves Division of Fisher-Xomox and was travelling a lot within the country with occasional trips to Singapore.

Here is an incident that I cannot forget. Aishwarya Rai had won the Miss World title in 1994 and was the Brand Ambassador for Pepsi. She had come down to Chennai for a promotional campaign and was staying in Chola Sheraton. The promotional campaign involved purchase of a Pepsi .The buyer was then supposed to write a slogan " I like Pepsi because........." and send the Pepsi crown to an address. If the crown had the lucky number and the slogan was catchy, Aishwarya Rai was supposed to visit the lucky winner's home. This much was known to the general public.

One fine day, I returned home at 9 PM from a trip to Delhi. Sudha was not at home and the house was filled with Sachin's friends, all dressed to their nines.I went straight to my room and , within a minute, Sachin rushed in.He was in a state of absolute panic. Here's what had happened--- just to play a joke, he had rung up all his friends and told them that he was the lucky winner of the Pepsi contest and that Aishwarya Rai would be visiting his home.He shouldn't have been surprised when all his friends trooped in by 7 PM. Anyway, his problems started then because he didn't know how to let them know that it was all a joke without getting beaten up. He tried to pretend to speak to Chola Sheraton and then told his friends that Aishwarya Rai had cancelled her program. They thought that he was now trying to get her all to himself when she came and refused to budge. They also wanted to know what was the slogan he had written and he told them that his dad ( me) had written the slogan and I would recite it when I returned from my Delhi trip.

So, when Sachin rushed into my room, he wanted my help in two matters:-
a) Think up a slogan quickly
b) Help him get rid of his friends

Here I was back after a tiring trip and you can imagine that I wasn't in my best mood.Anyway, after having read a lot of P G Wodehouse novels, I thought " What are dads for if not to pull their sons out of trouble at times like these"---- much like how Jeeves always bails out Bertie Wooster. So I squared up my shoulders, kept the old chin up, pursed my lips, gritted my teeth and strode out to the living room.I recited some slogan and mentioned that I was as disappointed as they were that Aishwarya was not coming and would they please leave now since it was getting late and their parents would get worried.
